Lectures :: Prof. Zed Rengel, PhD
We are pleased to invite you to attend the following lectures which will be held by Prof. Zed Rengel, PhD, University of Western Australia:
- Exploring the world of roots
- Philosophy of science
Monday, July 4, 2016. :: 11:00 :: Chamber room, VI pavilion
The lectures are organised by the Department of Soil Amelioration and International Relations Office.
˝Exploring the world of roots˝
There has recently been a surge of interest in improving the root systems to increase crop production and nutrient-use efficiency. Breeding for optimal root architecture and function in specific environments requires linking phenotyping for root properties with genotyping and development of molecular markers for root traits. This seminar will explore various techniques to allow assessment of root morphology and physiology to assess the properties of the “plants’ hidden half”.
˝Philosophy of science˝
Learning science is similar to learning how to swim: you can achieve a lot by imitating those around you; you may learn enough not to drown, but that may not give you the best technique. So, can we learn what constitutes good science? This seminars will explore some theoretical and practical implications of doing science well and publishing it in excellent journals.
Professor Zed Rengel has earned PhD at the Louisiana State University in the United States in 1988. He worked as postdoc and then Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide, Australia. In 1996 he transferred to the University of Western Australia in Perth, and has been the full professor of soil science and plant nutrition since 2001. Zed was awarded 13 prizes and awards (including Humboldt Research Award and Fulbright Senior Scholar Award), 11 fellowships (eg. Humboldt, OECD, Japanese STA, French Government), 4 Honorary Professorships and 6 Visiting Professorships (eg. Cornell-USA, Okayama-Japan, KVL-Denmark, Gissen-Germany). He was elected a Foreign Fellow of Croatian Academy of Arts and Sciences and was bestowed the Honorary Doctorate by the University of Zagreb.
He was invited to give 45 keynote addresses at international Conferences. He gave 224 invited seminars at 62 Universities and Institutes in 25 countries.
