Tuesday, May 21, 2019 :: 9:00 am :: Chamber Hall

We are pleased to invite you to attend the following lecture “Effect of rearing technology on piglets interactions during lactation and early post-weaning period” which will be held by prof. Dejan Škorjanc, PhD, University of Maribor, Slovenia on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 9:00 am, Chamber Hall.

Summary: The aim of the study was to find out how to reduce possible aggressive behavior of piglets during lactation and after formation of new groups of piglets in post-weaning period. In each repetition five litters were involved. A simple and cheap technology was introduced; three farrowing crates were opened and piglets could move and sucked at different sows (G), in comparison to two individually housed litters (I). At weaning a new two groups were formed named G and I. For behavior analyses video records were used with exception for suckling/cross-suckling, which were determined with direct observation. Eight different behaviors were estimated during lactation, and five in post-weaning period. In summary, preliminary results suggested that early piglet’s interactions from different litters had some beneficial effect on reducing post-weaning aggression behaviors.

The lecture is organised by the Department of Animal Science and Technology and International Relations Office.
