Fisheries and Game Management

Proposed study program respects the need for highly specialized and flexible way of studying fisheries and game management with the emphasis on the development of individual competences. Engaged is the educational staff from several departments and existing research facilities (including a fishery laboratory with a hatchery and Faculty's hunting ground). This graduate study programme has been adjusted for the enrolment of graduates from studies in the field of biotechnological science, as well as from other corresponding study programmes. A high degree of elective modules is anticipated, and the possibility of studying at a different university in Croatia or abroad for 1-2 semesters. The students achieve expert knowledge in fisheries, game management, environmental protection and related sciences, as well as the ability to make independent decisions. A Master's degree holder is trained to work as leader and manager in fisheries and game management organizations, to work in advisory services, managing offices in local management bodies, teach at specialized high schools, to perform jobs on the market and in media of fish and game tools and products. Master is also prepared for specialization through the postgraduate studies.

Objective

Based on current scientific knowledge and contemporary teaching process, students will be able to acquire generic and field specific competencies that are needed to achieve sustainable development goals and to work in different fields of fisheries and game management. The objective is to train students to participate in research in the scientific field of environmentally friendly management of fisheries and game management conducted at higher education institutions and scientific institutes as well as for further education at postgraduate study level. Furthermore, students are trained for starting self-employment and managing various activities in organizations, extension services, state administration, local self-government and media related to fisheries, game management and environmental protection, as well as to work in state administration, research institutions, vocational schools and companies dealing with fish and hunting equipment trade.

  1. Identify positions and trends at home and abroad in the field of freshwater and marine commercial and recreational fishery, freshwater aquaculture and mariculture, methods of management of open water, hunting and game management, game breeding, nature conservation and biology and ecology of aquatic and terrestrial organisms
  2. Analyse the specific problems of cost-effective and environmentally friendly farming and catch of aquatic and terrestrial organisms, and solving them in new situations based on the synthesis of knowledge and skills
  3. Usage of acquired theoretical and practical learning in the acquisition of new knowledge in the field of fishery, game management and nature conservation
  4. Independently organize and manage the work of the institutions in the areas of fishery, game management and nature conservation, the work of the extension services and in work at local authorities in this domain
  5. Organize and manage the work of professional associate in government agencies, scientific, educational and research institutions as well as for the teaching of vocational secondary and high schools from this domain
  6. Manage the transport operations of fishing and hunting equipment
  7. Recognize the important developments in this domain and present them to the media and public
  8. Set up a research from certain area, conduct field and laboratory work, study the relevant literature, statistically analyse data and write and submit a paper for publication in a professional journal
  9. Use ICT in their everyday work.
  10. Implement the development of game management and economic fundamentals of fisheries.
