Opis predmeta

Preparing students for understanding the geological structure, relief, and the dynamics of the Earth. Students should be able to identify and describe different types of landforms and geomorphic processes that led to their creation. Knowledge of basic terminology and methods of geomorphic geomorphological research. Obtained knowledge will enable an objective evaluation of relief and connecting with other natural components.

Opće kompetencije

Work with students on understanding the geological structure, relief, and dynamics of the Earth. Students should be able to identify and describe the different types of landforms and geomorphological processes that led to their creation. As well they will obtain knowledge of the basic terminology and methods of geomorphological research. The acquired knowledge will enable the student objective evaluation of relief and connect with other natural elements.

Način rada

Obaveze nastavnika

To regularly conduct teaching.
Monitor the presence of students in the classroom.
Hold consultations with students if necessary.
Arrange 3 tests of knowledge during the semester and complete exams in regular exam terms.

Obaveze studenta

Class attendance is mandatory, and during the semester the student is required to prepare and present a seminar whose topic is related to one of the lessons.
The student is required to take the partial exams of knowledge during the semester or a full examination at regular examination periods.

Activity during classes It is expected that students participate in discussions during classes, exercises and seminars.
Seminar Student is required to prepare and present a seminar whose topic is related to one of the lessons. Before third test Additional seminar
First test 20 questions (enumerate and describe, define, calculate, etc.).
Second test 20 questions (enumerate and describe, define, calculate, etc.).
Third test 20 questions (enumerate and describe, define, calculate, etc.).
Final exam In the case that student does not pass the exam through partial tests during the semester, he/she needs to take complete written exam that includes the entire material. During exam periods

  1. Introduction – Object and goal of geomorphology and its role in earth sciences.
  2. Factors of relief development (active and passive).
  3. Structural geomorphology – The origin of the Earth and the Solar system. Earth’s structure and composition
  4. Structural geomorphology – Tectonic elements of the lithosphere and types of morphostructures. Internal dynamics of the Earth (plate tectonics and relief, types of morphostructures - volcanic and seismic, planetary relief: continents, oceans, the mid-oceanic ridges).
  5. Structural geomorphology - Volcanoes and earthquakes; reasons for their occurrence; their spatial distribution on the Earth; volcano types; distribution of earthquakes.

  7. Earth's outer dynamics - Exogenous factors in the formation of the Earth (the sun's rays, water, snow, ice, wind and biogenic).
  8. Earth's outer dynamics - The physical and chemical weathering of rocks and relief; Aeolian processes and forms Earth's outer dynamics - Slope processes and forms
  9. Earth's outer dynamics – Glacial processes and landforms. Periglacial processes and landforms. Earth's outer dynamics - Fluvial processes and forms; Marine and lacustrine relief forms
  10. Second test
  11. Earth's outer dynamics - Karst processes and landforms - exogenous and endogenous
  12. Evolution of relief - Biogenic and anthropogenic impacts on the formation of the relief; question of the natural and socio-economic environment
  13. Field work - To familiarize students with the geological and geomorphological characteristics of a particular area. During lectures students will perform practical exercises (determining the types of rocks and minerals, age determination based on fossils, geological and geomorphological mapping).
  14. Seminar - Independent study work on one of the topics related to the content of the lectures in the module.
