V. Balkan Symposium on Fruit Growing

On Sunday, June 18, 2023, began the scientific symposium "V. Balkan Symposium on Fruit Growing", hosted and organized by the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture. The symposium is being held from June 18 to 21 2023, at the Dubrovnik Hotel in Zagreb, under the auspices of the International Society for Horticultural Science (ISHS).

The symposium is sponsored by the University of Zagreb, the City of Zagreb, the Ministry of Science and Education, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Croatian Tourist Board and the City Tourist Board.

At the opening ceremony of the Symposium, all the participants and guests present were welcomed on behalf of the Organizing Committee by Prof. Boris Duralija. Ph.D. Welcome speeches were also given by the representatives of the institutions present: for the Ministry of Agriculture the Director of the Administration for Support in Agriculture and Rural Development, Ms. Željka Gudelj Velaga, B.Sc., for the City of Zagreb, the Assistant to the Head of the City Office for Economy, Environmental Sustainability and Strategic Planning, Mr. Emil Tuk, MD. vet., for the ISHS prof. Ph.D. George Manganaris, and on behalf of the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Agriculture, Vice Dean for International and Interinstitutional Cooperation Associate Prof. Kristina Kljak, Ph.D., who also opened the symposium.

During the three-day symposium, the latest findings and achievements in the field of fruit growing will be presented. In 101 presentations in five sections, topics from the fields of: biodiversity, breeding, biotechnology and physiology of fruit trees, cultivation technology and pest control in various fruit species will be presented orally or by poster; quality and postharvest fruit control; and sustainability, economics and management in fruit growing.

In addition to the plenary lectures and invited speakers, oral presentations, poster sections and discussions, the symposium included a technology tour on the last day (visiting reference orchards of various fruit species in the wider Zagreb area).

This symposium is an excellent place to bring together all stakeholders with the aim of sharing knowledge and creating space for new collaborations between academia and industry.For four days, participants had the opportunity to discuss the latest research, share experiences, visit plantations and shape the future of fruit growing in the region and beyond.

City of Zagreb, as an inspiring and historical environment, was the perfect setting for this event, which added value to the participants by familiarizing them with the rich culture and heritage of this city.

The University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture, as the organizer, would like to thank especially the sponsors, whose support was crucial for the successful realization of the Symposium, as well as the patrons, supporters and everyone who contributed in any way to the organization.

We thank all authors, eminent experts, and other participants for coming, contributing, and actively participating in this symposium.
