Scientific and research activities

Department employees have been participating in scientific research and professional work from the beginning of the Faculty in the micro-agroeconomic field: economic administration and taxation, agricultural accounting etc. More recently, special attention is focused to management and entrepreneurship as well as risk management in agriculture. The main areas of many years of scientific and professional research are economics and organization of agricultural production, business efficiency and financing, theoretical and methodological study of production and economic systems of agricultural production, their modeling and testing. Department employees are trying to make available their knowledge, by transferring knowledge to institutions and agricultural producers, to use it for the purpose of improving production. Cooperation includes the development of conceptual and executive investment projects, studies, operational programs for the development of agricultural holdings, calculations for the needs of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), participation in the establishment and maintenance of the Agricultural Accounting System (FADN), and many other activities.

During its long history, the Department has conducted several research projects in the field of farm management and economics of production of individual agricultural products, in the field of modeling, research of entrepreneurial potential of family farms and development of computer systems for family management, agroeconomic efficiency of sustainable agriculture and risk management and insurance in agriculture. Employees of the Department have made a significant contribution to the design of the Rural Development Program. The great contribution of the employees is visible in the development of the methodology for irrigation projects, within the implementation of the National Project of Irrigation and Management of Agricultural Land and Waters. Employees of the Department participated in the development of the Rural Strategies of the Republic of Croatia and had an active role in the implementation of the same (two Department members were Assistant Ministers of Agriculture). Recently, the members of the Department have been working on numerous projects within the Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union, among which the calculation of standard output (SO coefficients) for the needs of the FADN system and calculations for the needs of the Rural Development Program stand out. As part of the VIP (Agricultural Research Council), the employees of the Department try to influence the increase of the income of agricultural producers through the development of an online system for the preparation of compound feeds and the application of new technologies in beekeeping.

History

The Department of Management and Rural Entrepreneurship is one of the successors of the Scientific Chair for Economic Administration (1919-1924), i.e the Department of Economic Administration, established in 1924 within the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. Over the past hundred years, Department has changed its name several times: the Department for the Organization of Agricultural Production (1946), the Department for the Organization and Economics of Agriculture (1960) , the Department for the Organization and Economics of Agricultural Enterprises (1963), with two cabinets: Cabinet for tax assessments, calculations and agricultural bookkeeping, and the Cabinet for Mathematics), and the Department for Agricultural Administration (1993). The last organizational change was in 2010., since when the current name of the Department is used. The Department was established with the aim of covering the micro-agroeconomic area of research (management and entrepreneurship, risk management in agriculture, agricultural accounting).
