Experimental station National Collection of Domesticated Olive Varieties of Croatia

With the transition of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture to the study reform according to the Bologna Declaration, new programs and study modules were opened, and among the large number of modules, the modules Mediterranean fruit growing (Bs ), Olive growing and Organic olive growing (Ms) were opened. The Faculty's interest in providing a Experimental station where students would do the practical part of the lessons from modules related to olives and olive growing found fertile ground in Vodnjan, where the strongest association of olive growers in Istria, the "Agroturist Association", operates.

By inviting the professors of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture in Vodnjan to give lectures for the olive growers of Southern Istria, a fruitful cooperation was achieved and a joint project called Raising the Collection of Domesticated Olive Varieties was launched. The aim of this project was to provide the Faculty of Agriculture with a collection of olives on an area of approx. 2.5 ha, and for the Agroturist association to ensure the Mother Tree Orchard of their autochthonous varieties of olives on an area of approx. 1.5 ha. The establishing of the collection began with the opening of soil profile and the taking of soil samples for chemical and mechanical analysis. This was followed by planning the terrain, digging holes and planting. The goal was to create uniform pedological conditions for each planting location. The occasion event at the opening of the collection aroused great interest from the public and local media.
