Experimental station National Collection of Domesticated Olive Varieties of Croatia
The agreement from 2011 between the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture, the Vodnjan Agricultural Cooperative and the City of Vodnjan agreed on a scientific and professional basis for establishing and maintaining the collection (National Collection of Domesticated Olive Varieties of Croatia) on an area of 2.5 ha for the next 50 years. Today, the collection has around 60 varieties and genotypes of olives, most of them isolated from the area of the Mediterranean part of the Republic of Croatia, as well as introduced varieties present in our olive production in the last 50 years. On the same surface, the soil was prepared for planting another 40 varieties. The digital weather station records weather data and sends them from the experimental station to the Department of Pomology at the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture.
The trees are in fruition, and the harvested olives are used for oil extraction. The obtained oil is used to perform student exercises from the sensory analysis program of olive oils.
Entering the full fertility of the olive trees of this experimental station opens up the possibility for quality field teaching, professional practice, research and implementation of projects related to the study programs of the University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture.
