Graduate Study
Agricultural Engineering

Graduate study in Agricultural Engineering, with major in Amelioration or Mechanization, can be continued after 3-year BSc study in Agricultural Engineering or related studies from University of Zagreb Faculty of Agriculture or other related faculties in Croatia and abroad.

Study Programme Coordinator: Assoc. Prof. Ivan Mustać, PhD

Description

The study programme is adapted to the new trends in higher education as well as to the conditions of the labour market in the new economic environment. The course enables development of individual capabilities and meets the requirements of specialised agricultural professionals in the existing and future state and private economic subjects and institutions.

The study course extends over two years (7th, 8th, 9th and 10th semesters). The curriculum comprises 22 modules with a total of 120 ECTS points. Mandatory modules make 28% of the curriculum while elective modules account for 72%, which makes the course highly flexible. Students have the option to spend 1 to 2 semesters studying outside the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb (in Croatia or abroad). Mandatory one-month practical work (between the 8th and 9th semesters) can be also done abroad.

After graduating in Amelioration, students are awarded the title Master of Science and have acquired the knowledge of the status and trends of agriculture in this country and elsewhere in the world, basic elements of agricultural profession and the know-how required for agricultural amelioration. Depending on the group of elective modules passed, graduate Masters of Science possess the competences to run technologically demanding processes associated with agricultural amelioration and land development. They can work on the construction of drainage and irrigations systems in practice, their designing in design offices, as well as on maintenance and management of amelioration systems. Upon completion of this study course, students have the necessary conditions to take up doctoral studies.

Objective

Based on the latest scientific knowledge and technological achievements, students will be able to acquire generic competencies such as ability to apply knowledge in practice, to plan and analyse. Moreover, students will acquire specific competencies related to the multidisciplinary study programme - synthesis of hydrotechnics and agrotechnics.

The objective of the study programme is to train students to plan and prepare a (case) study documentation (e.g. on pedological and/or hydrological layers) in the field of hydro-amelioration (drainage and irrigation) and agro-amelioration on agricultural and public land (parks), for monitoring and control of execution of certain hydro-technical activities (amelioration constructions) – embankment building, execution of canals, laying pipelines, building  infrastructure, maintenance of amelioration and agro-amelioration systems, for sustainable land management and protection and conservation of natural resources of soil and water in agroecosystems.

The knowledge acquired during the study enables further education at postgraduate study level or employment in companies associated with hydro-amelioration design, production and distribution of amelioration equipment, agricultural production as well as amelioration construction companies and consultancy services. Successfully completed study programme enables employment at specialized institutes and departments, state and local administration, extension services and provides opportunity for self-employment and management of various jobs in the field of amelioration.

Learning outcomes

  1. Apply acquired knowledge of mathematics, physics and informatics to solve various problems related to agricultural engineering.
  2. Promote the use of alternative energy sources and application of precision agriculture systems in order to achieve economically and environmentally sustainable production.
  3. Plan and organize equipping of farms with machinery and equipment in different production branches.
  4. Recommend appropriate hydro and agro amelioration interventions with aim of sustainable use of agricultural land and water resources in agriculture.
  5. Apply and critically asses solutions for drafting standards in hydro and agro amelioration interventions.
  6. Explain principles, programme and project basic elements of agro and hydro amelioration drainage and irrigation systems.
  7. Equip for work in designing, construction, maintenance, management and administration of amelioration drainage and irrigation systems.
  8. Analyse and critically evaluate environmental impacts, establishment of monitoring and implementation of amelioration systems legislation.
  9. Apply specialist knowledge in process automatization in agricultural facilities and organize application of most suitable transport systems in agriculture.
  10. Plan different technologies of modern capacities for processing of raw materials within farms.
  11. Recommend the most appropriate industrial processing technology for a certain product.
  12. Participate in multidisciplinary research teams in national and international surroundings.
  13. Choose and apply the most appropriate methods of analysis of testing results for various research problems in agriculture and provide the most informative results interpretation.
  14. Present results of scientific research and expert work at national and international conferences.
  15. Acquire knowledge for further education on postgraduate doctoral and specialist studies.

Description

The study programme is adapted to the conditions of the labour market in the new economic environment. The graduate programme provides the knowledge and the competences to plan, design and management of mechanization in all segments of agricultural production on field and indoor space, including environmentally friendly use of mechanization. The study programme includes seminar works and individual projects for specific field of mechanization.

The study course extends over two years (7th, 8th, 9th and 10th semesters). The curriculum comprises 24 modules with a total of 120 ECTS points. Mandatory modules make 28% of the curriculum while elective modules account for 72%. The study programme enables 1-2 semesters studying in Croatia or abroad, outside the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb. Mandatory practical work can be also done in Croatia or abroad between the 8th and 9th semesters.

The aim of the graduate programme is to teach candidates to plan and management of mechanization in agricultural production in the existing and future state and private economic subjects and institutions.

Objective

Based on current scientific knowledge and contemporary teaching process, students will be able to acquire generic and field specific competencies that are needed to achieve sustainable development goals and to work in different fields of agricultural engineering. The objective is to enable students to participate in planning, designing and application of mechanization in different branches of agricultural production, storage of agricultural products and use of renewable energy sources, biomass and biofuels as well as waste management from agriculture. Furthermore, the objective is to enable students to participate in scientific research in the field of agricultural mechanization conducted at higher education institutions and scientific institutes, and for further education at the postgraduate study level. Acquired knowledge provides opportunity for employment in companies associated with production, trade, use and maintenance of agricultural machinery and equipment, agricultural production, consultancy companies, extension service, agricultural and technical institutes and departments as well as jobs in state and local government.
