- Undergraduate studies of Agricultural Engineering
During six semesters of undergraduate studies of Agricultural Engineering, students gain professional knowledge in multidisciplinary areas of agricultural production, with the emphasis on agricultural mechanization and technology. Mechanization in farming and animal husbandry, horticultural production, plant protection and other areas of agricultural production are studied. In the area of plant and horticultural production, besides equipment and machinery, the study also covers the topic of production surface planning, and maintenance of amelioration, irrigation and drainage systems. Furthermore, the study provides the opportunity to gain knowledge in the area of finishing and processing technologies, storage and cooling of agricultural products, and production of bio-fuels from agricultural bio-mass. Similarly, techniques in animal husbandry are studied along with objects, equipment and mechanization needed for the production. The bearer of this qualification is authorized to use the legally protected university degree of Bachelor (baccalaureus) in Engineering of Agricultural engineering. The bachelor can seek employment in companies that produce, sell and use agricultural machinery and equipment; irrigation and drainage systems, finishing and processing capacities, as well as bio fuels production facilities. Bachelors are trained to carry out technical projects in all areas of plant and animal production, management of an agricultural farm, and work at state or local government offices. Employment is not necessarily limited to the area of agricultural production.
- Graduate studies of Agricultural Engineering - Mechanization
The study programme is adapted to the conditions of the labour market in the new economic environment. The graduate programme provides the knowledge and the competences to plan, design and management of mechanization in all segments of agricultural production on field and indoor space, including environmentally friendly use of mechanization. The study programme includes seminar works and individual projects for specific field of mechanization. The study course extends over two years. The curriculum comprises 24 modules with a total of 120 ECTS points. The aim of the graduate programme is to teach candidates to plan and management of mechanization in agricultural production in the existing and future state and private economic subjects and institutions.
Scientific and research activities
Department of Agricultural Engineering applies modern methods in testing of agricultural machinery and recently was acquired new measuring amplifier from the world's leading company in this field which enables precise testing in various fields of agricultural engineering. Since new tractors and other self-propelled agricultural machines must fulfill strict standards related to exhaust emissions, a diesel engine exhaust gas analyzer has been also acquired, which is currently the most modern such device in the Republic of Croatia. Recently, Department conducts research on the possibility of using plant residues of arable, fruit and vineyard production as energy sources, as well as new energy crops.
As part of its scientific activities, Department of Agricultural Engineering has been organizing the international scientific symposium "Actual Tasks of Agricultural Engineering" for 47 years. For the last twenty years this symposium has been held under the sponsorship of world (International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering), European (European Society of Agricultural Engineers) and Asian (Asian Association for Agricultural Engineering) Agricultural Engineering) associations for agricultural technology, and for the last four years also under the sponsorship of CASEE, organized network of universities of Central and Southeast Europe, of which the University of Zagreb is a member. Papers from the symposium are published in proceedings indexed in the world's most recognized databases for this type of papers (Thomson Reuters: Conference Proceedings Citation Index and ISTP, CAB International - Agricultural Engineering Abstracts).
The main expert activity of Department of Agricultural Engineering since 2002 is the issuance of certificates of conformity and technical specifications for tractors as part of the tractor type-approval procedure which must pass all tractors before the first registration in the Republic of Croatia.
Experiment stations and laboratories
Department of Agricultural Engineering has in Maksimir an experimental station for tractors, agricultural machinery and equipment testing with a total area of 16000 m2. Within this station there are asphalt test track intended for the testing of tractor traction characteristics, laboratory with hydraulic brake Schenck Ul-40 for engines up to 300 kW testing, workshop and storage.
Department of Agricultural Engineering was founded in 1919 under the name of the Department of General and Agricultural Engineering within the first departments and cabinets of the then newly established Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry in Zagreb with the aim of covering teaching in that area. The founder and first head of the Department was prof. ing. Raimond Fantoni. Within this Department in 1922 was established the Department of Machine Testing and the faculty acquires the right for agricultural machines and equipment testing. Department operated under this name until the school year 1945/46, when it changed its name to the Department of Agricultural Engineering, and operated under the name until 1978. In early 1978 Department of Agriculture Engineering was integrated with the Institute of Agriculture Mechanization which has existed since 1951 as an independent research institution. Department expands and changes the name to the Institut for Mechanization, Technology and Building in agriculture, which operated within the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at the time 1978/92. After the reorganization of the Faculty of Agriculture in 1992 Department changes the name to the Department of Agricultural Engineering, which it still holds today.
