The course introduces students to a historical overview of landscape design the social role of garden art through history. Comparison of Western and Eastern civilizations. The beginnings of the formation in prehistoric times as a cultural landscape. An Overview of European historical creativity: Egypt and Antiquity - Middle Ages - Renaissance - Baroque - English Landscape Style - Eclecticism of the 19th Century - Modern in the 20th Century - Land Art - Contemporary Trends. Far East Creativity: China - Japan - Islam in Asia, Africa and Europe. The tradition of garden art in Croatia. Importance of garden art heritage and the problems of its evaluation and protection. The exam is conducted through partial tests or final exam, preceded by the mandatory fulfillment of seminar papers and design exercises.

Students learn basic design and structural characteristics of every historical period and are also familirized with rich grammar of landscape design language that was developed during history.
